The National Coastal Protection Strategy

The Danish coastline contains great value, including habitats, conservation areas and natural resources of both national and international interest. The coasts are used throughout the year for a wide range of activities, and they are thus of great value to the population, coastal landowners, tourists, and the industry.

Coastal protection schemes are often found to be conflicting between various economic, natural, and recreational interests. The Danish Coastal Authority therefore launched a national coastal protection strategy in 2011 to raise awareness on Integrated Coastal Zone Management. The purpose of the strategy is to increase the quality of the Danish coasts and provide more attractive coasts for the benefit of everyone.

The objective of the strategy is to ensure that coastal protection schemes in Denmark are carried out in an optimized, long-term manner and based on an overall assessment of the coast. Coastal protection should, to a higher extent, be carried out as nourishment activities rather than solid constructions, and it must be secured that it is carried out in due time and, if possible, as a solution involving longer stretches of coast. The strategy also emphasizes the importance of removing inefficient existing protection along the Danish coasts.

However, the strategy is not only aimed at coastal protection. With the strategy, it is emphasized that coastal dynamics are taken into account in all activities along the coast, so that the consequences of the activities are assessed based on a long-term consideration of the coast as a whole.

At several places, natural and untouched coasts are under pressure, and previous development demonstrates that the desire for further utilization of the coasts will continue. At the same time, climate change will increase the erosive effect the sea has on our coasts in terms of higher water levels and more intense storms, increasing the challenge for the present near-shore utilization, affecting future coastal development.

The coastal protection strategy sets the stage for a coordinated, long-term, and overall approach to the coastal zone management. In order to support comprehensive coastal solutions, more cooperation between the authorities administering the coastal activities is necessary.

The strategy also sets the stage for improving the cooperation between private individuals and authorities. Public awareness of our coasts, today and in a future perspective, is important for our coasts to accommodate all activities. It is important that any barriers between private individuals and authorities are eliminated. Consequently, the strategy will improve private individuals’ contact with the authorities, so that the experience is as good and uncomplicated as possible.
